At SoundFjord’s Sound//Space pop-up record store and community hub at the amazing warehouse space at V22 Summer Club, 100 Clements Road, SE16 4DG.
The Material Studies project seeks to open experimental artforms to anyone who wishes to participate in the collective, improvised sonic exploration of various materials and objects, whether by actively working with the objects, passively absorbing the interactions of others or by expressing a response to the sonic exploration through visual or written acts.
The use of traditional instruments, terminology and tools of manipulation will be avoided. Participants will together develop an improvisational language based solely on the sounds that can be teased out of various everyday objects, with each session being themed around a particular material or object.
No expertise or previous experience is required, instead the sessions focus on the communicative potential of collective improvisation, where every participant needs to listen and react to everything that is happening around, where every gesture has an influence on everything else.
The underlying principle of the project is to promote a corrosion of the space between the artist-performer and the contemplator-audience and to promote the idea that we are all valuable as artists regardless of education or class.

Open Research Panel: Live Cinema
16 th May -18-20h – Lecture Theatre, Chelsea College, University of the Arts, London.
This panel continues the series of “Open Research Panels” that looks into how audiovisual and performance culture emerges from crossing platforms in different cultural spaces. The production of content, concepts and knowledge in audiovisual performances has expanded over the last 50 years and remains a new field.
What is Live Cinema in the context of the transmedia practices and contemporary art?
With origins in “Wayang Kulit” , pre-cinema practices, silent cinema and expanded cinema,we present Live Cinema as the frame of audiovisual compositions with an open narrative and live art component. Using real time audiovisual performance techniques we are confronted with an hybrid artform within multimedia structure that is generated in the frame of actual art and digital culture.
Visiting researcher Dr. Blanca Regina (U.R.J.C, Spain), Steven Ball, Research Fellow within the British Artists’ Film and Video Study Collection at Central Saint Martins, Ana Carvalho lecturer at Facultade de Letras, Universidade do Porto (Portugal), and Christopher Thomas Allen, Director of The Light Surgeons, will contribute to an open panel debating what is Live Cinema, presenting their artworks and research.
